How Your Kids Can Make Their Own DIY Superhero Costume

Sep 09, 2019

You already know you’re going to be snapping all the Halloween photos this year — your little one is just so adorable all dressed up! But as any parent knows, when trick-or-treating time arrives, keeping kids excited about their costume can be a struggle. (Raise your hand if your child has ever spent all of fall begging to be a ghost, only to whine, "No, I want to be a magic fairy cowboy dinosaur!" when the big moment arrives.)

We’ve found that it helps if our kids actually make a costume themselves, because it helps them feel more invested in it. Plus, kids love showing off things they create from their own imagination! And nothing stirs big ideas like superhero getups. The Klutz Jr. My Superhero Starter Kit comes with everything your little one needs to make their very own superhero cape, mask, belt, and power cuffs.

Kids ages 4 and up can use the included foam tape to stick punch-outs (no scissors required!) of lightning bolts, tacos, stars, and a ton of other icons to the superhero accessories in the kit. That means they can take inspiration from superheroes they already admire, or create their own unique character from scratch. The craft kit parts and instructions are designed to be simple, but high quality, for easy Halloween fun that lasts. They can pair their superhero accessories with whatever outfit they want before flying off to save the night from ghoulish villains!

When our own kids tried on the included cape, which closes with a Velcro strip, we were surprised by how silky soft it was. They proceeded to fly down the halls like lightning-fast heroes! At the end of the day, they did not want to take off their superhero items. Honestly, they were so adorable in their capes and masks that we didn't mind.

As a bonus, the included booklet encourages early reading skills. Instructions for craft kits often look like an office desk manual — ahem, excruciatingly boring — but this one is filled with fun illustrations, easy steps, and bonus crafts and ideas.
