Scholastic Inc., the global children’s publishing, education and media company announced its 2012 fiscal Q2 earnings showing a 3% increase in revenue. Improved profits reflected higher sales of educational technology and services, children's books and ebooks, and classroom and supplemental educational materials. According to Richard Robinson, Scholastic Chairman, President and CEO, "Both of our education segments performed strongly last quarter. In the Educational Technology and Services segment, revenue rose more than 30% and operating profit grew substantially. Scholastic's market-leading reading intervention program, READ 180® Next Generation, continues to perform extremely well, benefiting from enhanced features as well as READ 180's proven effectiveness, which was confirmed again last month by the results of the U.S. Department of Education Striving Readers study." Live on ABC's The View, Whoopi Goldberg announced the launch of Scholastic's "One Million Bookprints for One Million Books" campaign. For every person who creates a "Bookprint" at the online book community, youarewhatyouread.com, Scholastic Book Clubs will donate a new children's book to nonprofit literacy organization, Reach Out and Read. Each member of The View's studio audience received five Scholastic books to take home: The Invention of Hugo Cabret, The Hunger Games, The 39 Clues: Maze of Bones, Captain Underpants, and Clifford the Champion. Scholastic recently revealed the covers of three of its four planned tie-ins to the upcoming "Hunger Games" movie, based on the bestselling book trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Various media outlets such as Entertainment Weekly, Publishers Weekly, VH1’s The FABlife and more, were excited to share the news. The Hunger Games Tribute Guide, The Hunger Games: Movie Tie-in Edition and The Hunger Games: Official Illustrated Movie Companion will all be released on February 7, 2012. Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the nonprofit responsible for the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, has announced a partnership with The President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services to create the National Student Poets Program, the country’s highest honor for youth poets whose work exhibits exceptional creativity, dedication to craft and promise. The program is open to teens who win a 2012 national Scholastic Art & Writing Award for poetry. Each year, five winners will be honored with the first National Student Poets to be introduced in September 2012 at the National Book Festival.
