Even readers who are not pet lovers will marvel at the heroics shown by the animals described in these ten stories. Each story recounts a true and actual event in which an animal saves the life of a human being, and in some cases even risks its own life to do so. Perhaps familiar — but no less riveting — are the few stories in which a dog rescues a neighbor in the middle of a snowstorm, or another helps his owners escape from a house on fire. But how about a hamster saving an entire family? Or a cow fighting for the life of an injured farmer? There's a story of a gorilla rescuing a little boy in a Chicago zoo and another of a dolphin swimming to the aid of a woman who nearly drowns off the coast of Florida. These are great stories and author Jeanne Betancourt tells them well. In a letter to readers at the end of the book, she writes, "We are lucky to share our planet with other animals." Never was the sentiment more exact than in these tales featuring ten unbelievably brave and compassionate animals.
