Hogwarts Crest Cookies

Show off your decorating skills with these clever little cookies, proudly presenting the four House colors: red for Gryffindor, green for Slytherin, yellow for Hufflepuff, and blue for Ravenclaw. These cookies are delicious no matter what House you're sorted into! Keep the cookies from softening by storing them in a shallow, airtight container. But don't stack them until the icing has set completely to avoid sticking and smearing.

Plan for 1-2 hours (plus setting). Recipe makes 7-8 cookies.

  • 10 oz / 300 g Sugar cookie / Biscuit Dough
  • Tube of gold decorator frosting / icing
  • 7 oz / 200 g Royal Icing
  • Red, green, yellow, and blue natural food coloring
  • Tube of black decorator frosting / icing
  • Special Equipment: 4 small paper or plastic piping bags

Step 1

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Print and cut out the two Hogwarts Crest Cookies templates here. Thinly roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut around the larger template. Transfer to the baking sheet and the shape more cookies in the same way, cutting out shapes from the smaller template as well. Re-roll the trimmings and cut out more shapes, making sure you have the same amount of both. Chill for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375° F or 190° C/gas mark 5.

Step 2

Bake the cookies for 15 minutes, until golden around the edges. Leave to cool on the baking sheet, then transfer to a board or plate. Once completely cooled, pipe a line of gold decorator frosting around the edges of the cookies as shown in the photograph. Pipe a cross in the center to divide the cookies into four sections.

Step 3

Divide the royal icing among four small bowls. Use teacups or small mugs if you don't have enough bowls. Stir a few drops of one food coloring into each bowl. Add a drop of water to each bowl if necessary to thin out the consistency. You want the frosting to have a smooth, level surface when it's left to stand for a few seconds (see Top Tip). Spoon the frostings into four piping bags and snip a very small tip off the ends. Pipe the frostings, one at a time, into the sections of the cookies, making sure each color is in the right section. Squeeze the frosting almost to the gold piping. It should spread out to the edges because of its loose consistency.

Top Tip!

When thinning royal icing, you need the smallest amount of cold water. Just add one drop at a time until the icing loses it shape but isn't quite liquid when the spoon is lifted from the bowl.

Step 4

Using the black decorator frosting, pipe an "H" onto the smaller cookies. Carefully place one small cookie on the center of each crest. If the colored frosting has set by this time, secure with an extra blob of frosting. Pipe lines of black frosting into the shoulder areas of the cookies. Leave to set for several hours before serving.
