Reading books about friendship and getting along with others teaches your child the importance of respect as they build relationships with their peers. It also helps them better understand the dynamics of friendship and what it means to be a friend.
Of course, disagreements are a normal part of friendships, but they’re not always easy to navigate. These moments are the perfect opportunities to teach your child to react with grace, patience, and understanding for their friends. Uncomfortable emotions like frustration, sadness, anger, disappointment, and fear can all be faced head-on by reading and discussing stories together.
During read-aloud time, start a conversation by asking your child about the last time they had a disagreement with their friends and how they resolved it. Ask them how they came to their resolution, and why they chose to respond with kindness — and how that made them and their friends feel.
