What you need:

  • 2 feet of clear plastic tubing with a 1/4-inch inner diameter
  • 3 inches of clear plastic tubing with a 3/8-inch inner diameter
  • ruler
  • scissors
  • tiny beads, glitter
  • water
  • food coloring
  • light corn syrup
  • baby oil

Note: these supplies will make three bracelets.

What to do:

  1. To make one bracelet, cut an 8-inch piece of the 1/4-inch tubing and a 1-inch piece of the 3/8-inch tubing (for a fastener).
  2. Slide both ends of the 8-inch tube into the 1-inch fastener and have your child try it on for size. If it is too large, trim the larger tube to size.
  3. Remove one end of the bracelet from the fastener and place your finger over the other end. Invite your child to drop tiny beads or glitter inside, and then add water. There should be a few inches of air at the top, so the water can move inside the bracelet.
  4. Carefully slide the free end of the bracelet into the fastener as far as possible. The fit should be snug.
  5. For variations on this bracelet, try using corn syrup, with a few drops of food coloring added. Does this move differently from the water? Or use baby oil instead of water.
  6. Encourage your child to think of friends who might also want a bracelet. What kind are they most likely to enjoy? (Water with purple glitter? Baby oil with tiny beads?)
