Peter H. Reynolds' Favorite Picture Books About Family

Aug 15, 2022

Peter H. Reynolds’ stunning artwork and writing are familiar to many children and parents alike. His beautiful children’s books are staples in home libraries — and with poignant messages of self-love and self-expression, his books continue to make a positive difference in children’s lives.

Reynolds’ new book, Our Table, brings readers the story of a man who builds a strong, sturdy table for his family. Throughout the years, as the man becomes a father and then a grandfather, the table that he built stands strong and sees the family come together time and time again for meals, laughter, and joyous events.

Eventually, however, the table is used less frequently. It is now up to the man’s family to come back together to reconnect.

“I’m a huge fan of family dinners — but today’s families often look very different than the typical Norman Rockwell scenes of yesteryear,” says Reynolds. “My definition of family is anyone who I invite to my table to break bread and share stories with.”

That time spent together is indispensable and takes a central role in Our Table

“In my view, a family dinner is a communion of kindred spirits who celebrate what matters most: human connectivity, love, laughter, story sharing, and compassion,” says Reynolds. “That’s the essential recipe to nourish the entire human family!”

The family dinner table is one of the best places for learning, where we can share something we’ve learned each day and listen to the stories and wisdom of our elders if we’re lucky to have them with us, adds Reynolds.

In keeping with the theme of families coming together, Reynolds chose his favorite books that celebrate family, carefully considering the titles he knew offered timeless messages of love and togetherness.

“The storybooks in this collection touch on the learning themes and critical life lessons that can be a key part of family conversations at the dinner table,” says Reynolds. “They provide common, accessible language and reference points that help shape children’s positive mindset, and help them navigate the world long after they’ve left the comfort of the family table.”

Here are Peter H. Reynolds’ favorite books about family to bring to your own table.
