Tie Allowance and Chores Together

Giving 6- or 7-year-olds some responsibility is a great way to encourage their desire to feel a bit more independent. Assign your children some chores such as setting the table, sorting laundry, and cleaning up toys. Give them a little space so they learn that you trust them to be able to handle things on their own. They may need some nudging on occasion to finish up, so tie it to a positive consequence. A small allowance is a great motivator!
