Rocking in the Dirt

Help your child learn about geology today. All you need is a garden trowel and an area with exposed soil. Ask your child to look for different colors in the soil. Is the top layer a different color than that of deeper layers? Why might that be? Ask him to pick out his favorite rocks. Then head home and together research the objects you find. This is an easy way to introduce your child to basic geology ideas.
