I Just Want to Bang on the Drum All Day

Drums are a primal instrument, used from the beginning of time for both communication and entertainment. Instead of making another purchase, why not make your own? Some ideas: Wrap a plastic bucket or an oatmeal box and wrap it in construction paper (use glue to make it stay put). After it’s dry, cut out a piece of rubber sheeting—sized to fit the opening plus a few inches to spare. Secure with a rubber band. Let your child color and decorate the drum. Create more drums from various-sized containers to explore the concept of pitch and tone.
