Breast Cancer Awareness: Printable to Share

Printables for children to share with everyone in class!

Editor's note: This blog post was originally published September 30, 2015.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Almost every one of us knows someone who has been touched in some way by breast cancer, so why not talk to our kids about this disease and help them become more aware?

Cancer can sometimes be a scary thing for children to understand—it’s a scary thing for adults to understand!—but the more we read about it, talk about it, and learn about it, the better.

Print out this page of Breast Cancer Awareness tags, cut them out, and share them.

Forward this post to your children’s teachers, your neighbors, and your friends. The more who partake in this conversation, the better.

Consider laminating the whole sheet before cutting and then attaching a pin to each small circle or square so that children and adults can pin them to their shirts or coats. Or simply tape them on—whatever is best for the recipient.

What books have you used to talk to children about cancer? We’d love to hear them.

One of our favorite books to help children understand cancer is In Mommy’s Garden, by Neyal Ammary and illustrated by Christopher Risch. The analogy of cancer to weeds in a garden is one that helps children really understand the nature of this disease.

Share your book ideas on the Scholastic Parents Facebook page, or find Amy on twitter, @teachmama, and let’s continue the conversation!
