When I was a child, my mom would spend summers nagging me to go outside and play…usually because I was curled up in a corner with a book! So I couldn't deny my excitement when my nine-year-old fell in love with books.

Reading is a fantastic way to help prevent your child from succumbing to the summer slide, that infamous loss of skills that happens to children when they're not in school. The 6th Edition Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report found that 96% of parents agree that reading during the summer helps kids during the school year.

One key to keeping your child reading is to find just the right book, and in our house, a good adventure story is always a hit. Here are five favorites that are perfect for your 9 to 13-year-old child.

I believe C.S. Lewis’ classic Chronicles of Narnia series has a place on the bookshelf of every family home, having captivated so many generations of children.

For fans of graphic novels, Max Brallier’s The Last Kids On Earth is a fast-paced adventure about one boy’s quest for survival, following an apocalyptic monster attack that has rendered his fellow citizens zombies.

My nine-year-old was so captivated by book one of Chris Colfer’s The Land of Stories series, The Wishing Spell, that we quickly reserved all of the other titles available in the series from our local library.

In James Patterson's Treasure Hunters, the four adventurous, treasuring hunting Kidd siblings face their biggest challenge yet — finding their missing parents!

A great introduction to historical fiction, kids will be captivated by the collection of true life adventures featuring children in I Survived: Box Set by Lauren Tarshis.

Nowadays my daughter always has a book in hand — she's reading in the car, in the garden, and under the covers when she really should be asleep. Life really has come full circle as I now find myself nagging her to go and play with her sister!
