These 5 Books Can Help Improve Classroom Behavior

By Scholastic Editors

Books that promote and encourage good manners for a healthy learning environment.

Grades PreK–K, 1–2, 3–5

Teaching students good manners not only keeps your classroom running smoothly, but is a great lead-in to teaching the importance of kindness and empathy. These five children’s books about manners are perfect for emphasizing proper classroom behavior and may even inspire your students to show off their good manners outside the classroom, too.

For students in grades 3–8, check out how you can use Wonder to encourage kindness and prevent bullying in the classroom.

    1. Clifford’s Manners

Who better to teach your students manners than Clifford the Big Red Dog? By the end of this inspiring book, your students will be saying “please” and “thank you,” waiting their turn, sharing, and showing off the rest of their good manners to the world, just like Clifford.

    2. I’ll Wait, Mr. Panda

One of the funniest kids' books about manners, this bestseller shows students that patience can pay off in a sweet way.

    3. What Does It Mean to Be Kind?

In this heartwarming book about kindness, your students will witness the power and magic that occurs when a child musters the courage to be kind to a new student in class.

    4. Do Unto Otters

The Golden Rule is in full effect in this hilarious tale of Mr. Rabbit and his new neighbors, the Otters. Thanks to some sage advice from Mr. Owl, Mr. Rabbit learns that treating his new neighbors just as he’d like to be treated goes a long way in building and sustaining meaningful relationships.

    5. How Full is Your Bucket?

After reading this thoughtful book about the importance of kindness and generosity, your students will not only respond to their classmates’ feelings with empathy, but will reflect on their own feelings in the same constructive way.

These children’s books about manners not only inspire students to reflect on the importance of proper classroom behavior, they show students the power kindness and empathy have in making their classroom, and the world, a better place.
