The Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Challenge is a free program designed to be both educational and fun to help prevent the effects of the summer slide—the learning losses that can occur during the summer months.

Over the course of 18 weeks, kids can enter their summer reading minutes online, unlocking digital rewards as they complete weekly reading challenges; and access book excerpts, videos, and other summer-exclusive content.

There are some changes you’ll want to be aware of! Read on!

KIDS HELPING KIDS

As part of Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza, kids can unlock book access for other kids in two ways:

  • Once participating kids reach 25, then 50 and then 100 million minutes collectively read in the Summer Reading Challenge, Scholastic will donate a minimum of 200,000 books in collaboration with United Way to kids in need across the United States!
  • At retailers and libraries hosting a Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Celebration, kids and families can donate newly-purchased or lightly-used books by dropping them off in a Scholastic Read-a-Palooza Summer Reading Give Back book drive box. These books will be donated to a local organization, chosen by the retailer.

On Thursday, September 5, kids reached the third milestone of 100 million minutes and unlocked the final book donation! Congratulations to all participating readers!

MAP

Once readers begin entering their minutes in the Summer Reading Challenge in May, pins will appear on this map highlighting the top locations in each state. You'll also be able search for your school, public library, community partner organization!
