Watch the 2008 READ 180
National Summer Institute in action!

In the spirit of celebration, more than 900 READ 180 educators, classroom teachers, principals, district administrators, and Scholastic colleagues joined in San Diego, California, for four days of intensive professional development and the opportunity to share implementation successes, best practices, and creative classroom ideas.
Led by an esteemed cadre of Institutional Architects and distinguished presenters, including Marilyn Adams, Ph.D., Kevin Feldman, Ed.D., Ted S. Hasselbring, Ed.D., Kate Kinsella, Ed.D., and Tonya Ward Singer M.F.A., READ 180 educators strengthened the READ 180 Community, connecting with colleagues from New York to Texas to California.
The Institute opened with a memorable welcome, The Francie Alexander Show featuring the READ 180 and System 44 Instructional Architects. A poolside reception followed with music, dinner, and the opportunity to network with READ 180 colleagues. Thursday and Friday were filled with over 55 elective workshops in eight instructional blocks where participants were able to differentiate and personalize their professional development experience.
Each afternoon brought the personal insight from award-winning authors Pam Muñoz Ryan and Sharon Draper, followed by festivities in the 21st Century Classroom Exhibit Hall with book signings, best practices media presentations from your READ 180 peers, an interactive RED Café, a look at new and innovative Scholastic Education solutions, and, finally, an exciting raffle! Four packed days culminated on Saturday with the presentation of the 2008 READ 180 Outstanding Educator Award to Donna Pappas of Temperance-Kutner Elementary School in Fresno, California. The Outstanding Educator Award was created to recognize the exceptional commitment of READ 180 teachers who bring reading to life, truly turning lives around; we were proud to recognize Donna’s inspirational dedication to her students.
Thank you to all of our participants for making the 2008 READ 180 National Summer Institute a great success!
