Twirl and Swirl

What you need:

  • paper plate
  • tempera paint
  • paintbrush
  • pencil
  • masking tape

What to do:

  1. Draw lines on the plate to make three equal sections. Then have your child paint each section a different color. Ask her to name each color.
  2. When the paint is dry, help her poke a hole through the center of the plate with the pencil. Wrap the tape around the pencil tip on the top side of the plate.
  3. Let your child hold the pencil and spin the plate. Ask her to watch the plate and to describe what she sees. (The spinning motion creates a kaleidoscope effect. As the plate slows down, your child will see the separate colors again.)

Learning benefits:

  • builds sense of sight
  • promotes color awareness
  • enhances understanding of cause and effect
