Outdoor Vacations: Philadelphia, PA

Why go?
The Liberty Bell, Fairmount Park (one of the largest city oases in America), and the Philly cheesesteak for starters! Not to mention, this history-rich, family-friendly city numbers among the most affordable and walkable in the country.

While you're there
Visit the Liberty Bell Center; the Please Touch Museum, with its carousel, crafted in 1908, and Statue of Liberty arm and torch made completely out of toys; and the Independence Seaport Museum, where kids can explore a World War II diesel submarine and a Navy cruiser from 1892. And plan on spending at least half a day at the Franklin Institute, easily one of the best children's science museums in the country. Later, grab a bite at Reading Terminal Market, America's oldest farmers market. Check out the food shops, produce stands, and restaurants, such as Tommy DiNic's, a family-run eatery that serves an amazing Italian-style Roast Pork and Beef Sandwich. In fact, the Travel Channel recently crowned the house specialty "Best Sandwich in America"—take that, Philly cheesesteak!

Where to stay
All summer, the city is offering The Visit Philly Overnight Hotel Package. If you book two nights at one of 26 participating hotels (room rates start at $128 per night), you'll get free hotel parking, generally an expensive proposition in the city; a welcome gift; and two all-day passes for the Phlash Bus, which travels between the city's top attractions, like Penn's Landing and Independence Mall.
* All hotel prices are approximate.

Insider tip
This summer, bargains abound in the City of Brotherly Love: Pick up a Philadelphia City Pass for everyone in the family. It'll save you nearly 50 percent off the combined admissions to five of the city's must-see attractions (such as the National Constitution Center or the Philadelphia Zoo)—plus, you get to skip most of the lines.
