11 Fantastically Magical Books About Unicorns

May 14, 2018

I have two fantasy-loving daughters, so it's not surprising that unicorns are rated highly on their lists of beloved creatures. What isn’t there to love? After all, unicorns are beautiful and magical, strong but peaceful, and ultimately, somewhat mysterious. All together, this makes unicorns captivating to children — and maybe a few adults as well! This book collection features picture books, graphic novels, and chapter books, all with unicorns as a central story character.

Picture Books

1. Thelma the Unicorn by Aaron Blabey is the story of an ordinary pony who dreams of being unique — like a unicorn. When her dream becomes reality life isn’t quite as she expected and Thelma learns an important lesson about learning to love herself just the way she is.

2. Uni the Unicorn by Amy Krouse Rosenthal is the story of a unicorn, Uni, who refuses to believe that little girls aren’t real…just as a little girl believes unicorns like Uni are most definitely real. Will they ever be able to become real-life friends?

3.Lily the Unicorn by Dallas Clayton introduces Lily, a quirky unicorn with a love for life. Lily wants to be friends with Roger, a rather worried penguin who is scared to try new things. Can two creatures so different in outlook and temperament learn to be friends?

4. The Little Charmers book series by Meridith Rusu features three best friends — Hazel, Posie, and Lavender — who are learning all about magic! InThe Baby UnicornHazel notices one of the unicorns in Charmville is different from the others. She tries to make him fit in but discovers that it is this unicorn’s differences that make his special.

Early Chapter Books

5. Unicorns Don’t Give Sleigh Rides is the seventeenth book in The Adventures of the Bailey School Kids series by Debbie Dadey and Marcia Thornton Jones. The friends are on the hunt for the majestic white horse who helped their friend when she was hurt. Could the horse, in fact, be a unicorn?

6. Unicorn in New York is a four book series by Rachel Hamilton about Louie, a unicorn who dreams of being a star! In book one, Louie Lets Loose!, Louie travels from Story Land to New York meeting a host of humorous characters along the way.

7. The Melowy book series by Danielle Star introduces us to the Melowies — Pegasuses born with hidden magical powers and a mysterious symbol on their wings. The Melowies attend the Castle of Destiny School where they discover the true magic inside themselves. Start with book one, Dreams Come True.

8. At the Enchanted Pony Academy, glittery ponies learn to use their magic. In book one of the series by Lisa Ann Scott, All That Glitters, Daisy is excited but rather nervous to start at the magical school. At the academy Daisy will learn much more than magic, she will learn to believe in herself.

Graphic Novels & Chapter Books

9. The seventh book in the Ricky Ricotta series by Dav Pilkey, Ricky Ricotta's Mighty Robot vs. the Uranium Unicorns from Uranus, departs from our typical unicorn character depiction…with evil unicorns! When Mighty Robot is captured Ricky learns an important lesson about not taking others for granted.

10. The Phoebe and Her Unicorn graphic novel series by Dana Simpson explores a developing friendship between a socially awkward girl and a rather vain unicorn. In book one, Phoebe and Her Unicorn, Phoebe is granted a wish for rescuing Marigold Heavenly Nostrils (the unicorn!) and wishes for the unicorn to be her friend with hilarious results.

11. Pip Bartlett’s Guide to Unicorn Training is the second book in the Pip Bartlett series by Maggie Stiefvater about a girl who can talk to magical creatures. This time Pip and her friend Tomas are on the hunt for the person responsible for cutting off unicorn tails at the Triple Trident Unicorn Show.

In many ways, I hope my two girls hold onto their love of unicorns as they grow up. After all, we could all do with a touch of sparkly unicorn magic to brighten our days!
