Variety Exclusive: “Animorphs” TV Series in Development at Disney+ with Scholastic Entertainment and Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media Producing

Animorphs Feature from Variety

Variety has exclusively revealed that Disney+ is developing a new live-action adaptation of Animorphs, the bestselling Scholastic book series by Katherine Applegate and Michael Grant. The project brings together an accomplished creative team, including Scholastic’s Chair and President, Iole Lucchese, and SVP & Publisher, Caitlin Friedman, who will executive produce on behalf of Scholastic, and recent Oscar-winner Ryan Coogler, who will executive produce on behalf of Proximity Media.

The series will reintroduce audiences to the story of five teenagers who discover that Earth is being overtaken by a parasitic alien race. After encountering a dying alien who grants them the power to morph into any animal they touch, the teens form a secret resistance to protect the planet.

Since its launch in 1996, Animorphs has become a cornerstone of middle‑grade literature. The main series spans 54 books, has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide, and continues to resonate with readers for its blend of sci-fi adventure, emotional depth, and ethical complexity.

The new adaptation is being developed with a powerhouse group of partners. Lucchese, Friedman and Coogler are joined by writer and producer Bayan Wolcott (The Testaments, Class of ’09), who will lead the script and serve as an executive producer. Coogler's partners Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian will also executive produce for Proximity Media. The series is being produced by 20th Television.
