Trey Baker, a master’s student at Harvard and teaching artist for Scholastic’s Our Greatness is Our Story spoken word program, was featured in Harvard Education Magazine for his debut book, When I Look Up. The book is part of Scholastic’s Rising Voices series, a collection of high-quality books and teaching materials to drive well-being and literacy development in grades K-5 while sharing stories that resonate with all students.
In the piece, one of Baker’s mentors, Scholastic Chief Academic Officer Michael Haggen, says:
“Trey invites readers to see the world through his lens, encouraging them to explore their own stories and perspectives,” Haggen said. “This book offers students a chance to connect, reflect, and build confidence in their own voices — all while supporting meaningful literacy development.” Mentoring Baker “has been a truly meaningful experience. From the start, he’s shown a deep sense of purpose and a natural gift for expression. When I Look Up beautifully reflects that journey. It’s honest, reflective, and rooted in the kind of storytelling that resonates with young people.”
