Scholastic’s Lauren Tarshis Shares Tips for Summer Reading with USA Today

In a recent article, USA TODAY interviewed Lauren Tarshis, Senior Vice President and Editor-at-Large at Scholastic and author of the bestselling I Survived book series, for tips on how to keep kids engaged in summer reading.

Tarshis recommends making reading a family activity and offers parents a conversation starter to approach the topic with their kids: “We’re all going to put down our phones from this time to this time and we’re going to read,” said Tarshis. “Let’s go to the library together. Here’s an independent bookstore, let’s go there. Let’s make that an excursion.”

She also suggests tying reading to a fun summer activity for kids who might not like to read. For example, asking kids to do research before going to an amusement park. They can read reviews, find the three best roller coasters and make a list of things to bring.

The other tips outlined in the article include finding a book that gets your child excited, adding an incentive or challenge and starting a reading community or book club.
