LGBT Books — Mirrors and Windows for Students

50 minutes

Shannon Hitchcock, author of One True Way presents with Rob Sanders, author of PRIDE: The Story of Harvey Milk & the Rainbow Flag.

Two authors discuss how their books fit into the history and struggle for LGBT rights and how these texts can serve as mirrors and windows, allowing some students to see themselves in the pages of a book, and others to gain empathy, thus creating a more inclusive school environment.

Participants will discover some of the challenges LGBTQ+ students face, examine books that can help students better understand their own identities (mirrors) and the identities of others (windows), and create an individualized plan, (innovate), to become a more effective student ally by using books with LGBTQ+ themes, thus fostering more effective communication.
