Girls Who Dared: Bethany and Malala

Grades 3-6
30-60 minutes
Classroom or Assembly

In a lively talk, Jenni and the students will discuss what it means to be brave and daring, before learning about two brave young women: Bethany Hamilton (who lost her arm in a shark attack) and the Malala Yousafzai (who, after being shot by the Taliban, became an advocate for education).

Malala Dared & So Can You

Grades 3-6
45-60 minutes
Classroom Workshop

Malala Yousafzai is an activist who overcame great odds after an extremist group attacked Malala in her home country of Pakistan because she refused to stop going to school. Jenni will share Malala’s story with students, focusing on Malala’s response and activism. With Malala’s words “One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world” in mind, students will be given an opportunity to brainstorm, craft, and share a haiku about how they can be activists—large or small—in their homes and communities.
