As a professional speaker and member of the National Speakers Association (the premier organization for professional speakers), he’s all about making your visit day a success — and a fun one!

Bruce Hale is the author and illustrator of more than 40 books for young readers, from picture books and easy readers to tween novels. His popular titles include Clark the SharkBig Bad Detective Agency, and the award-winning Chet Gecko Mysteries. A popular presenter, he is a Fulbright Scholar in Storytelling, and has spoken at libraries, conferences, and schools from New York to New Delhi. Bruce lives in Santa Barbara, California.

Dream Big Author Assembly 

Grades K-6
45 minutes

A blend of character education, stand-up comedy, and pro-literacy message, this highly interactive assembly includes:

  • Storytelling from one of Bruce’s books;
  • Audiovisual presentation about his journey from reluctant reader to author;
  • Question and answer session with the audience; and
  • A brief cartooning lesson.

Although the basic presentation remains similar, Bruce will alter it for different grades to be age-specific.

Story Power Writing Workshop

Grades 3-6; 100 students max
50 minutes

Energize your writing program by introducing your students to the fundamentals of story writing in a fun, lively format. This interactive workshop includes storytelling, the creative process, basic story elements, and the creation of a group story right on the spot.

Conference and Festival Appearances

Bruce has presented to national and international conferences of educators and writers, on topics ranging from Hooking Reluctant Readers, to Storytelling Skills Every Librarian Should Know, from Rocking the Skype Author Visit, to various workshops on the writing craft.


Virtual Visits

Bruce has done Skype Author Visits with classrooms from Hong Kong to Houston. His visits usually include a presentation with slides on how he went from reluctant reader to author, a dramatic reading from one of his books, a Q&A with the students, and a brief cartooning demonstration.  However, visits can be tailored to meet the needs of the school, and can focus on the writing process, cartooning, revision, or any number of topics.

Fee: $250 per 40-minute session; $350 for two Skype sessions on the same day.

Note: Bruce also does 10-minute freebie sessions for classrooms that have read his books and want to discuss them.

AV and Tech Needs for In-Person Visits

Bruce travels with his own laptop computer and dongle. He will require:

  • Powerpoint projector
  • Screen
  • Microphone (preferably lavaliere, but others will work)
  • Small table
  • Easel, pad, and markers
  • Bottled water
