Spring is a fantastic time to refresh your classroom library with new titles that’ll engage students and encourage independent reading. Scholastic Collections provide a quick, easy, and cost-effective way to spruce up your library through curated collections that are specifically designed to enrich your curricula, engage your students, and provide you with the tools you’ll need to celebrate the academic, social, and linguistic backgrounds of all your students.

Rising Voices Classroom Library

Featuring a mix of nonfiction, biographies, and culturally-relevant fiction, Scholastic has partnered with David C. Banks, President and CEO of the Eagle Academy Foundation and Founding Principal of The Eagle Academy for Young Men, to curate the Rising Voices Classroom Library for Grades K–5. This collection highlights stories of the most underrepresented literary protagonists in our classrooms: boys of color. By fostering a classroom community that supports positive representation and equity, students of all backgrounds will benefit from widening the scope of their world in books and beyond.

With this collection, you can build a rich classroom community, enabling deep discussions about social justice issues and identity development while giving students the tools they need to grow as leaders and thinkers. Books in this library have been selected with five Rising Voices themes in mind:

  1. Family, Culture, and Community: How can I help others around me? How do others enrich my life and make me feel safe and protected?
  2. Someone LIke Me/Memorable Characters: How does learning that the people in these books are like me or like people I know help me better understand myself and the world?
  3. Heroes and Role Models: What qualities make someone a hero? What lessons can I learn from the courageous actions of people from the past?
  4. Strong and Resilient/Problem Solvers: What qualities help people succeed when they face challenges?

Thinking Beyond Today: What can I learn from how the people in books dream and plan for the future? How do people of vision imagine what they want to achieve and then make what they imagine a reality?

The Four Pillars Classroom Library

Finding books that are engaging, relevant, and representative of your students’ backgrounds, interests, and skills is paramount to establishing academic success and creating super readers. The Four Pillars Classroom Library for Grades K–5 is built upon the four pillars of structured independent reading necessary for student achievement. Instructional supports provide you with a framework to implement purposeful and structured independent reading while providing students with a way to think deeply about the books that they love to read. The Four Pillars of Structured Independent Reading are:

  1. High Student Engagement: Expose your students to authentic titles that motivate them, capture their interest, and introduce them to rich language in contexts that they will encounter in the real world.

  2. Social-Emotional Learning: Provide your students tools to help them develop the aptitude to listen and reflect while building their fluency and comprehension skills.

  3. Culturally Relevant Texts: Offer your students both mirrors to see themselves in as well as windows to gain insight into the world around them.

  4. Genre Study: Provide your students with titles that foster their depth of knowledge across all genres while supporting their instruction.
