The Power of Green program reinforces language arts, math, and science skills while exploring tips for conserving energy and recycling, and teaching about electric and gas safety.
In this brainstorming and writing activity, students are encouraged to think about their favorite outdoor spaces and the importance of protecting them.
Skills supporting learning standards: vocabulary development, informative/explanatory text writing
Copies of the “Helping Planet Earth!” student activity sheet
To begin this lesson, ask students to brainstorm a list of their favorite places to go outside. This list might include local parks, community gardens, front yards, rivers, or their favorite vacation spots. Ask students:
- Why is this place important to you?
- What kinds of games and activities do you do or play there?
Distribute the activity sheet and review the information with your students. Have students work independently to complete the page and then review the answers as a class.
Ask students how saving energy and protecting Earth affects their favorite places.
