The Power of Green program reinforces language arts, math, and science skills while exploring tips for conserving energy and recycling, and teaching about electric and gas safety.
Students use poetry to convey important ideas about energy conservation with this writing activity.
Skills supporting learning standards: vocabulary development, poetry writing, conducting research
In this activity, students use their language skills and knowledge of energy conversation to create a diamante poem. Copy and distribute the "Words to Conserve" reproducible activity to your students. Read the directions and review key parts of speech as a group. Have students work independently or in pairs to write their poems.
When done, challenge students to research additional energy-conservation habits and create a shape poem to convey the tips. Students might create the poems in the shape of a compact fluorescent lightbulb (CFL), a power cord, or some other electric appliance.
