- Identify a regular beat and similarities of sounds in words in responding to rhythm and rhyme in poetry — Massachusetts English/Language Arts Curriculum Framework
- Scrambled Eggs Super! by Dr. Seuss
- Index cards
- Plastic eggs, assorted colors, about 40
- Colored Sharpie markers
- Cut down the index cards to fit inside the eggs.
- Choose pairs of rhyming words from the book. Stick with words your students will recognize.
- Use a Sharpie to write a rhyming word on each of the cards.
Step 1: Read the story and point out the rhyming words as you read.
Step 2: After reading, explain that students will be using the markers to decorate the eggs, adding dots, lines, zigzags, etc. Remind students to be careful when coloring if they are using permanent markers.
Step 3: Once they have finished, put one rhyming word in each of the eggs. Take 10 of the word-filled eggs and lay them out as you would if playing a game of Concentration.
Step 4: Have students take turns opening an egg and trying to find a pair of rhyming words. As they choose eggs, leave the eggs open, with the card beside them.
