1. Create a menu for a restaurant in the year 1775. Be sure to include a variety of meal options and prices. Give your restaurant a name and a theme or a logo.
Students should use drinks and food referenced in the book. Some examples include: tea, molasses bread, plum cake, meat, cheese, ale, sweet cakes, and beef stew.
2. Create a timeline of significant events in Hannah's life.
The timeline should include the gift of Promise and her parents' death, and should go up to Caleb's death and Hannah's reunion with Will. Students might even speculate as to what might happen in Hannah's future-acquiring more horses, marring Will-anything plausible.
3. Choose one character in the novel and write a help wanted ad to which he or she might respond. For instance, Meg might answer an ad to work in a boutique, while Phillis Wheatley would be more likely to answer an ad seeking an English teacher.
Students should use examples from the book. For instance, Wheatley's love of reading, writing, and languages is described on page 65.
