Who Were the Pilgrims?
Pose the following research question to students: Who were the Pilgrims and why did they come to America? After students complete their research, challenge them to present their findings in creative ways, for instance, as a time-travel interview with a Pilgrim or a website.
The Pilgrims left their homes in Europe to gain religious freedom in North America. Other groups of people have come to America for economic reasons. Some people wanted to explore and pursue adventure. Native American groups were removed from their homes to make way for European settlers. Discuss with students what would make them consider leaving their homes and striking out for a new country.
Who would students like to single out for special thanks? What have these people done that affected students in positive ways? Ask students to write thank-you letters to these people explaining how they have influenced students' lives. Encourage everyone to share their letters and any responses they may receive.
