CHALLENGE children to explore Ibis: A True Whale Story and other books about ocean life to discover interesting facts. Encourage children to write each fact in a complete sentence on a starfish, whale, or other sea creature cut-out shape.
IDENTIFY some ocean facts from the selection as examples, such as “Whales must surface to breathe every half hour” or “Baby whales are called calves.”
DISPLAY sea-creature shapes in a corner of the classroom decorated to resemble an ocean scene or a fish tank.
HOW TO GRADE When grading, look for use of complete sentences, capitalization, end punctuation, and correct factual information.
