This hilarious rhyming tale about a goose on the loose is part of a research-based phonics series designed to help young children learn how to read. The inside cover includes an introduction page about phonics, phonemes, and regular and irregular words. The inside back cover includes a list of words found throughout the story.
Children will engage in phonics activities to identify specific word sounds.
Show the children the cover of the book and read the title. Ask them to describe the cover illustration. What do they think will happen to the goose?
Teaching Plan: Finding "Double-O" Words
- Chart paper
- Markers and crayons
- Sentence strips
- Drawing paper
- Show the children the book Goose on the Loose. Read the title and ask them to name the two words in the title that rhyme. Write the words on chart paper. Ask them to join you as you spell each word out loud. Which letters appear in both words? Cover the g and the l in both words. Say "oose" aloud with the children. Then ask them to just make the "oo" sound.
- Explain that there are other "double-O" words in the story that have the same "oo" sound. Reread the story to the class and ask them to raise their hands when they hear a word with the "oo" sound, like goose or loose. Read slowly and accentuate the "oo" sound as you identify the words. Record the words they identify on chart paper.
- How many words did they find? Can they think of other words that have the same "oo" sound? Add them to the list.
- Provide the children with drawing materials. Ask them to make a drawing using as many "oo" sound words as they can. After they have completed their drawings, provide them with sentence-strip paper to write about their pictures. Provide time for the group to share and compare their work.
