With a little help from musical selections, you and your child can have fun creating a memorable family song.
What You Need:
- Audio player
- Favorite musical selections
- Paper crayons and marker
What You Do Together:
1 Sit down with your child and talk about your family. Discuss what your family likes to do, things you like to play with, even foods you like to eat or cook together.
2 Ask your child which of the things you discussed she likes best. Encourage her to say what she likes about them. As she explains in her own words, help her remember important details. Suggest that together you make a list called, "Favorite Family Things."
3 After you have made your list, put on some favorite tunes. (Make sure to include songs that your child likes as well as some of your own favorites). Choose one special tune together and use the list of favorites to come up with lyrics that fit the tune. Then record your family singing the song. You can even come up with a title!
4 As you listen to the recorded song, offer your child paper, crayons, and markers so she can create a drawing to go along with the song. Or suggest that the whole family listen to the tune and make a mural or collage of all the things mentioned in the song.
More Ways to Learn
Share family stories. With your child, look at family photo albums that contain both old and recent photographs. Take turns telling stories about the family members, traditions, or cultural activities pictured. Let your child choose a family story she likes best, and encourage her to retell it in her own words. Encourage your child to create drawings to go along with the story and to make into a personal storybook.
Put on a show. Help your child select family photos that tell a story. Talk about how she could act out the story. Together, gather appropriate props (perhaps you still have the dress or hat you were wearing in a childhood picture). Then help her dress up, and get ready for a fun presentation!
