Set Up and Prepare
This lesson takes approximately 45 minutes to introduce and begin researching. Students will need extra time to write their diaries.
Highlight the diary format of the book.
Students will choose a creature to research and then write a diary from that animal's point of view. Start with a visit to the library or computer lab so that students can gather information on their creature. Meet as a group so that students can share their ideas about how their creature might sound.
Give students time to write their diaries, and share them with their peers. Remind them to include some illustrations.
Bind the various diaries into an anthology and make it available in class.
Students can create an illustration depicting a day in the life of their creature.
Create a worm compost bin to help with lunch food waste.
