Vocabulary As You Go
As students read each chapter, ask them to put sticky notes next to words they don't know. Compile these into a class list.
Step 1: Have students use the class list of vocabulary words in a Funny Fortune activity.
Step 2: Assign a few words to each student. Explain that they should first look up the word, then write a one-line fortune using the word. They should underline the vocabulary word.
Things will go well for you today and you'll be blissful.
It will be sunny today—just radiant.
Step 3: When students have finished writing out their fortunes, have them place the fortunes in a box.
Step 4: Have students take turns picking a fortune, reading it to the class, and discussing the meaning of the underlined word.
