Choose from the following activities:
- Pretend that you are a friend of Sara's in her old school in Boston. Write a letter to her in Hawaii, asking questions about her new life there and telling about what is happening at home. Use the information given in the book about Sara's old class and teacher.
- On page 26, Sam says to his sister, “We'll have to go underground with this thing, understand?” Write a paragraph on why you think kids occasionally “go underground,” or do something behind their parents' backs. Explain if you think this is a common occurrence, and why or why not.
- Use encyclopedia articles and informational books to learn about the active volcano, Kilauea, on the island of Hawaii. Prepare an oral report with diagrams about how volcanoes erupt and explain what a lava field is.
- Draw a picture of the lava field and the cat that Sam and Sara find there. Include the ocean in the background. Use the descriptions in the book as a basis for your drawing.
