Ready-To-Use Teaching Ideas: Social Development
- Large bag
Invite all children to sit in a circle. Suggest everyone, including teachers, take off one shoe and place it into a large bag.
Tell the group that you will pass the bag of shoes around the circle. Ask one child at a time to close his or her eyes, reach into the bag, and pick a shoe.
Ask the child to find the person in the circle wearing the matching shoe. When he or she comes to the person wearing the matching shoe, he or she will say, "How do you do? Is this your shoe?" and shake hands. The child or adult with the matching shoe will be the next to pick a shoe. Repeat the activity until everyone has had a turn and all children have a matching pair of shoes.
Encourage everyone to put their shoes on and stand in a circle. When you say something that describes the shoes they are wearing, invite those children to run to the center of the circle. For example, when you say "white shoelaces," the children with white shoelaces will run to the center of the circle. Play the game until all have had a chance to run to the center.
Remember: Some children may be shy and need adult assistance when playing the matching shoe game. If they are not comfortable saying "How do you do?" invite everyone to say the phrase together.
What Comes in Twos? Send a note home asking parents to assist children in finding things in their homes that come in sets of two, like shoes or socks. Ask them to make a list of all of the pairs they find. Invite the group to share and compare their lists.
