Ready-To-Use Teaching Ideas: Dramatic Play
- children's favorite soft toys or dolls
- a camera
- poster board
Objective: Acknowledge the importance of children's special objects-stuffed animals and dolls-by incorporating them into daily routines and activities.
Prepare: For many young children, bringing along a favorite soft toy can ease the transition to school and offer needed extra security. Speak with children's parents and encourage them to allow their child to bring along a favorite doll or soft toy.
Remember: Special toys are often very hard to share. Talk about being kind and caring toward everyone's special toys. Assist children in learning appropriate ways to ask to hold someone else's toy or to refuse when they do not want to share their toy. Allow children to use special toys to get through difficult moments or when they need to spend time away from the group.
1 Take a photograph of each child's special doll or stuffed animal. Encourage children to share the names of their special toys so you can write each one on the bottom of the photograph. Then make a special attendance poster so that when children arrive in the morning, they can place their toy's photo on the poster.
2 Include children's dolls and toys when you sing hello songs. Encourage children to greet one another and their special toys.
3 Invite children to bring along their cuddle toys as they explore materials in different areas of the classroom. For instance:
- Dramatic-play area. Encourage children to involve their special toys in pretend play. They might choose to have a birthday party or make a pretend visit to the pediatrician or veterinarian. Children love to line up the chairs, pack their pocketbooks or suitcases, and enjoy a make-believe bus ride with their dolls.
- Block area. Invite children to make a special home or bed for their dolls. Provide fabric pieces and a variety of boxes.
- Book cover. Encourage children to share books with their cuddle toys. When activities become overwhelming, children often find comfort in moving to the quiet area with these toys.
