The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free global online and mobile reading program dedicated to encouraging kids to read every day this summer. Recent research from the Kids & Family Reading Report™ found that 80% of children ages 6–17 agree that summer reading will help them during the school year.
Encouraging kids to become the best independent readers they can be helps prepare them to tackle the upcoming school year. This summer, we want kids to read more books, log more reading minutes, earn digital rewards, and take a reading adventure!
To help motivate kids to keep reading throughout the 18 weeks of the summer (May 8 – September 8), there will be 18 reading activities, including games, quizzes, and videos based on popular children’s books.
At the close of the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, the school in each state with the most minutes read will be recognized as “Best in State” and will receive a special kit that includes a school plaque, congratulatory banner, student certificates, and other items that can be used to host a literacy celebration. The winning schools will also be featured in the 2018 Scholastic Book of World Records. Special recognition will be given to the top five libraries and community partner organizations nationwide with the most minutes read.
From March 15 to April 14, K–8 educators can enter Dav Pilkey Summer Reading Educator Contest for a chance to win a set of 500 books for their school. Enter to win here.
