Skipping unfamiliar words is often taught as an effective reading strategy, and indeed it can be. But it is only a good strategy if children reread the entire sentence and try to figure out the unknown word through context or syntatic clues. We cannot tell if children are rereading for meaning when they are reading silently. Good readers may reread, but struggling readers, who need to do so the most, often may not.
