In this long-awaited sequel to <i>Belle Prater's Boy</i>, cousins Woodrow and Gypsy set off to find Woodrow's mother, who "vanished off the face of the earth" a year earlier. After a mysterious phone call at midnight on New Year's Eve the moment that Woodrow was born 13 years before Woodrow is convinced that his mother is trying to make contact with him. They trace the call to a nearby town and decide to take the bus there to look for her. Joining them in their search is Cassie Caulborne, a new girl in school who has the gift of second sight, and Joseph, an African-American boy who has to sit at the back of the bus. Through Joseph, they find out about the injustice of segregation in the South of the 1950's. The search takes them through many twists and turns, through disappointment and hope, and ultimately to the truth.
