Callie and her little brother, Tyler, have no one to protect them; their parents, like everyone else between the ages of 20 and 60, died from the Spore Wars pandemic, and they have no surviving grandparents to protect them. This older generation, the Enders, now run everything. Callie and Tyler scrounge for food, squat in abandoned buildings, and try to avoid getting taken to one of the infamous orphanages. But Callie has found out that some young people are renting out their bodies to Enders so that they can experience youth again, using a breakthrough technology. In spite of her suspicions, the pay is too much to resist and she signs a contract at the body bank. A neurochip is implanted in her head, and she disappears into dreams as an Ender takes over her body. But when Callie wakes up during the rental and begins communicating with her Ender, she finds herself in the midst of a terrifying murder plot. Callie races between the squalor of the Starters and the luxury of the Enders as she discovers that she's at the center of a more terrifying conspiracy than she could have ever imagined, and that there may be no way to keep Tyler safe.
