It is 15th century Spain in the kingdom of Castile. The territory is in turmoil. At the center is King Enrique, brother of fourteen year old Princess Isabel. In her diary she explains the events of the day: "...Two years ago many of the grandes, the most powerful nobles of the kindgom, became disgusted with Enrique. They say that he is weak and indecisive. But they are like little kings themselves, always fighting over petty jealousies. Every powerful man has an army. Even the bishops have armies. To stop the feuding, some of these grandes and churchmen set up a rebel throne and placed my young brother upon it, proclaiming him King Alfonso. Now Castilla has two kings, the kindgom is divided, and the people do not know which king to serve "
