It's 1733, and Raisha is sold to a slave trader and taken from Senegal to St. John. There, she is forced to work on the plantation of cruel Jost van Prok. As a house servant, she doesn't have to endure the hot sun and back-breaking labor in the fields, but she cannot ignore the suffering of the other slaves. When some others escape from the plantation to live in a camp in the jungle, she must decide if she is willing to risk her life to help them. Based on a real slave revolt of 1733-1734, this historical novel conveys the horrors of slavery to a new generation of readers and highlights the heroism and dignity of the men and women who endured in spite of almost unimaginable suffering.
