This literary tour de force follows the life of Sayuri, one of Japan's most celebrated geishas, a woman who is both performer and courtesan, slave and goddess. The story begins when the girl Chiyo is sold to a representative of a geisha house, who is drawn by the child's unusual blue-grey eyes.
As a geisha, Chiyo takes the name Sayuri. As her life unfolds, she must choose between remaining loyal to her admirer, Nobu, or following her love for the Chairman.
