Inspired by a passage from Henry David Thoreau's Walden, this wonderfully appealing story follows two friends who have very different approaches to life. When the two agree to meet one evening in Fitchburg, which is thirty miles away, each decides to get there in his own way and have surprisingly different days.
Based on Henry David Thoreau, the "Henry" series is a sweet introduction to how we prioritize events in our lives, and our appreciation of nature. In Henry Hikes to Fitchberg, Students inevitably view Henry as the winner. When the book was first published, I asked my first graders who the winner was. They all agreed that it was Henry because he had taken the time to go swimming, eat berries, and just enjoy nature in general.
