In another story of suspense by the popular Goosebumps author, R.L. Stine tells a tale of telephone hijinks that might possibly lead to a girl's death. Written in a breezy, page-turning style, Stine immediately gains readers' sympathy for Karen, the girl in danger, as she is shown to be a typical teen with typical teen problems: her troubles with a flirtatious classmate who may have eyes for Karen's boyfriend, Ethan; a practical joker for an older brother; and the usual swirl of emotions that vex every adolescent. On top of all this, Karen has to deal with some very unnerving phone calls from a killer who phones his victims before murdering them. Karen fears that if she can't trace the caller, she will become next in line. Friends are not what they seem in this teenage thriller. Karen believes that it is sexy-voiced, green-eyed Wendy who is trying to steal Ethan away from her, and that her best friend, Micah, is trying to help her win him back. In the end, Karen picks up the sound of chimes from Micah's house in the background of one of the stalker's calls, and knows that Micah is the one who has been harassing her in order to have Ethan for herself. In a tense finale, Karen confronts Micah and regains the love of Ethan who discovers that it is really Karen he has cared for all along. Highly entertaining, Karen's story also provides an opportunity to discuss the need for honesty and loyalty between friends.
