3 Reasons to Bring Stella Writes Into Your Classroom This Year

By Janiel M. Wagstaff
Grades 1–2, 3–5

If you want enthusiastic, motivated writers this school year, you need Stella! She’s a powerful peer mentor whose excitement for writing is contagious! Stella brings energy to writing with her confident voice and infectious attitude. Her positivity and willingness to dig in to solve problems will help your students see writing as a joyful, worthwhile process. Armed with this mindset, there’s no end to what your writers might achieve!

If you want your students to write purposefully across genres, Stella is a perfect fit. Her kid-friendly stories create relevant contexts for multiple types of writing. Whether you’re introducing a genre for the first time, revisiting one, or simply looking for a way to breathe new life into writing, these four books will delight while deepening your students’ level of understanding about why we care to write opinions, information, narratives, and poetry. Stella’s model will empower your writers; she knows her words are important. Whether it’s changing school snack policies or bringing back memories for her grandmother, Stella’s writing makes a difference. Your students will want to write after hearing Stella’s stories. They’ll want to make a difference, too!

If you want to broaden your students’ repertoire of writing strategies, invite them into Stella’s classroom. It is an interactive environment where writing is grounded in plenty of talk, cooperative work, celebration and trust. Ms. Merkley, Stella’s second grade teacher, is a master at scaffolding students’ success with a myriad of instructional writing strategies teachers can readily adopt. Students gain effective ways to come up with topics, get started, work through tough spots, collaborate with peers and polish their work. Thirty years of my own teaching of young writers has gone into the making of these books. You can be sure the best, enduring strategies have been woven into Stella’s stories.

So, if you’re ready to turn your writers on for a year of energetic, purposeful writing, get Stella!
