December 24, 2013 Class Reward System in Action By Rhonda Stewart
Grades 3–5, 6–8

In one of my first blog posts at the beginning of the year, I gave an overview of how I implement my classroom management strategies. My school has put into action a school-wide, positive behavior program, which I have integrated into my own classroom management plan.

In my classroom, I work on fostering positive behavior with my students using a tool I created called Frog Prints. You can click the link to learn more, but in a nutshell, it’s a system that rewards positive behavior and redirects unfocused behavior by allowing students to earn Frog Prints (any kind of stickers or stamps work, I just like frogs) onto cards. When the card is full, students can cash them in for prizes on specially-designated days. Frog Prints is a great way for me to motivate my students and keep track of what they are doing.

Every week, I have a “Redeem Your Ticket” segment where students are able to convert their Frog Prints into prizes they have earned. My students never cease to amaze me. Just when I think I have my finger on the pulse of what the “hot” item will be for my classroom incentives, my students flip the script on me. In previous years, they were interested in redeeming Frog Prints for the prize bin. This year, my students are equally divided between the prize bin and the PBS school ticket. The PBS (Positive Behavior Support) tickets are the new hot item!

    The Big Reveal

    Prize Value in Frog Prints

Pearls of Wisdom - Use Post-it Notes as quick and easy labels.

Frog Print is validated and placed out of circulation. This Frog Print cannot be used again.

Recently, our class just participated in one of the “Big Reveals” when the students get to see the rewards they are working towards redeeming. This was both so much fun and very interesting to see how the students would manage their Frog Prints. Some wanted to spend all of their Prints at that moment,  they were so excited as to what they could “purchase” with them, while others were content to hold onto their cards and wait until the “ULTIMATE REVEAL” in June.

I am able to gain some insight from these Reveals and modify my classroom management style if needed. Motivation is paramount. Some of us just need a little more support than others.

Pearls of Wisdom — Relax and rejuvenate during your winter break. Be sure to take some time to enjoy yourself.

I want to take this time to wish everyone a very happy holiday season and a healthy and prosperous New Year. See you next year! Rhonda
