Fun With Classroom Photos

By Lindsey Petlak
Grades PreK–K, 1–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12

I take TONS of photos in the classroom everyday, and am constantly searching for ways to enhance, use, and have fun with them. Check out these quick and easy tools for kicking your classroom photos up a notch!

    NAME & PHOTOS

    INFORMATION WHY I LOVE IT!

    PICMONKEY

    MY EXAMPLE:

PicMonkey is an online photo editing/processing/enhancing site with both FREE and paid upgrade options. Within the site, you may upload photos to create collages, edit and enhance color, add shapes, text, frames, and decorations, then save to your computer or online photo share site. I use PicMonkey all of the time, especially for photos I it have on my computer (as opposed to ones on my mobile devices). The capability to make endless collages is so simple. I constantly add watermarks and captions to photos using PicMonkey. I’m able to save the pics to my computer and then post them on my class and Scholastic blogs.

    PIC STITCH

    MY EXAMPLE:

Pic Stitch is an extremely popular collage maker app. Combine photos into various collage layouts, edit and enhance individual photos, layer cool filters over your photos, and then push out to save on your device or social media site. This app is FREE. Pic Stitch is my go-to app for instant conversion of portrait or landscape photos to square shape. It’s also VERY effective at enhancing photos (clarity, light, softening, blemish correction, etc.) instantly with just a tap. I constantly add awesome filters to make my photos look vintage, feature more saturated colors, or beachy. Then, I push them out to Instagram or Facebook directly from the app.

    FLIPAGRAM

Flipagram is a FREE photo-video-creating app that combines your pictures into video slideshows that may be set to music and/or timed. After creating, you may save your video to your device or push out instantly to social media or other share sites. Whether it’s for my class website or a post on Facebook or Instagram, sometimes I have too many good photos to simply make a collage. I use Flipagram to make custom-paced or auto-timed slideshows to add to my class webpage, Facebook, or Instagram.

    RED STAMP

    MY EXAMPLE:

The Red Stamp app is a great FREE resource for creating cute digital eCards (with and without photos) to save and/or send out using text, email, or social media. Card templates for every season, occasion, and just plain fun excuses to send cards are all available for FREE. Let me count the ways I love and use Red Stamp . . . and I’d come up with about a thousand!  Send class snapshots of exciting happenings, thank you notes to volunteers or guest speakers, seasonal greetings to class families, and more! This personal touch is always well received by recipients!

    WATERLOGUE

The Waterlogue app costs $2.99, but truly turns your everyday photos into beautiful, usable works of art. In an instant, Waterlogue takes photos and turns them into watercolor images! You may choose different watercolor filters and effects for nice variety. This app is one that I’ve only recently discovered, but am obsessed with. I’m planning to use this app to convert photos of students into beautiful watercolor portraits to print and frame in dollar store frames to give as gifts for Mother’s Day and/or Father’s Day!

    A BEAUTIFUL MESS

    MY EXAMPLE:

A Beautiful Mess is a great app for making simple photo collages, but is even better for adding borders and text to your images (both type-your-own and pre-generated popular phrases). Choose fonts and colors to enhance your photos. This app costs $0.99. A Beautiful Mess (ABM) has less customizations than the app below, but it’s super simple, quick, and effective. If I need an instant caption, frame, simple graphic, or title added to a photo, I upload it to ABM and it’s ready in less than two minutes. Even if you’re not super tech- or photo-savvy, this photo embellishment app is easy to use for all.

    RHONNA DESIGNS

    MY EXAMPLE:

If you want to add beautiful text, artwork, frames, and more to your photos, Rhonna Designs is the app for you. New designs are released seasonally so that you can add personality to your pics all year long! Sometimes I want my mobile photos to have extra special images, seasonal embellishments, a wider variety of choices for fonts, or special effects like bokeh. Rhonna Designs offers those features when I need to add a little extra pizazz to pictures. Once I’ve altered the original photo, I can add them to digital e-cards, print them, or add them to my class website or Instagram. They always receive compliments!

I hope these tech tools help you find fun new ways to enhance and use your plethora of classroom photos! Please share your own favorite apps, sites, and other tech tools for photo processing! Thanks for reading and see you next week.
